review: women and other monsters

by jess zimmerman

this book took me a while to read, and I blame trying to read it after climbing in bed at night and promptly falling asleep. women and other monsters: building a new mythology is a series of personal essays about the ways in which women are encouraged or forced (you decide) to be good women to fit into the patriarchy's idea of what a woman is. each essay corresponds to a woman or monster with partly woman-like figures from mythology. some of the connections are a little iffy, but I don't really care. the comparison of real life to mythological monsters is just a skeleton to a collection of personal essays some more relatable that others. very happy to have read and will look for more jess zimmerman.

read if you like feminist observations, have felt to be the outsider woman/girl, like mythology, want social change.
